Rain in Alice

Rain in Alice

The sweet smell of rain
saturates the earth.
As flocks of birds
fly with giddy abandonment
through life giving moisture.
Vineyard leaves
stand to attention,
baby fruit clusters protected
under green foliage.

Distant ranges are thrown
into grey, misty relief
hiding the endless desert beyond.
This land engulfs my spirit
but awakens in me a newness like
delicate blooms on desert rose.

Red earth is softened,
dust dampened,
parched grass patches
showing a promise of growth.
The unfamiliar drum of rain
on gutterless rooves, tests the shelter
provided by these sturdy structures.

Eucalyptus scented tracks
swept clean of footprints
provide a blank canvas
for natural adornments.
Chocolate bark curls,
leaves and seed pods, broadcast,
embed themselves in soft earth.
Changing the landscape map
That insects quickly navigate.

Gutters run and pools form
creating still water bird baths.
This rain, rouses the senses.
Skin pores open,
absorbing the mix of
bushland and desert aromas.
Thunder rumbles the mind -
At midnight….I rise
to sketch these thoughts,
fleeting like lightening.
My ear tracks the rolling thunder
moving out across the mountains ranges.

The vastness of this land
makes a mockery
of our apparent substance.
