Flooding Desert Rivers

Photo Story

The natural beauty of the desert really comes out when it rains.

CHARLES RIVER

On my ride home on the 8th of January it was pouring rain but what a great opportunity to take photos of the wet event! The "X" on this map below shows where this video was taken. Make sure you have your sound turned well up and you can hear the subtle bubbling of the water as it overtakes the sandy river bed. It's just magical to watch knowing that when the rain stops and the sun comes out this will be dry sand again. The next day the Charles River was fully flowing.

By the time I post this it's a couple of weeks after the rain event. The grass continues to spring to life and the McDonald Ranges have an overall blanket of green. There are still water pools in part of the Todd River and the Telegraph Station has pools big enough to swim in but the water is now stagnant and starting to turn slimy. A perfect home for frogs and tadpoles and the myriad of other life forms that water supports.
